WELCOME TO PAPAKURA SEA EAGLES RUGBY LEAGUE
In a powerful display of community spirit and inclusivity, the Papakura Sea Eagles rugby league club recently hosted a special event dedicated to the Disability Whānau at Prince Edward Park.
The event, held on June 23, was a celebration of diversity, bringing together families and community members for a day filled with rugby league, fun, and a sense of belonging. Spearheaded by Papakura Sea Eagles Board Member Wade Atiga, the event was born out of a personal connection and a desire to create a platform for individuals with disabilities to actively participate in the sport. Wade, who has a disabled brother, was inspired to organise this event after discovering the Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) and recognising the need for greater exposure and opportunities in South Auckland. “Our goal was to make sure that people with disabilities feel included and valued within the rugby league community,” said Wade Atiga.
Too often, these individuals are spectators rather than participants. This day was about putting them at the centre of attention and giving them the chance to shine.
The event featured an exhilarating match between the PDRL Stags, with Jack McSweeney being named Player of the Day for his outstanding leadership on the field. Jared Atiga was honoured as the runner-up Player of the Day, and Sam Haira received recognition as the top defensive player. The game, which saw the PDRL Stags triumph 8 tries to 3, was a highlight of the day, showcasing the talent and passion of the players. Following the match, the Papakura Sea Eagles provided a delicious lunch, further strengthening the bonds between participants and supporters. The event was well-attended, with an impressive turnout from the local community, many of whom have family members with disabilities.
The success of this event was made possible by the dedication and hard work of several key individuals. Gladys Cairns, Adrienne Waratini, and Charlie Neal were instrumental in organising and supporting the day, ensuring everything ran smoothly and that everyone felt welcomed and included. Their efforts, alongside those of Sandra Hickey, who runs Physical Disability Rugby League and is a tireless advocate for the community, were crucial in making the day a memorable success.
The Papakura Sea Eagles Inclusiveness Day has now become a permanent annual fixture on the club's calendar. Last year, the club introduced a Player of the Day trophy, with each year's recipient's name engraved on it—a tradition that continued this year, further solidifying the importance of this event. Reflecting on the day, Wade Atiga highlighted the joy of seeing the players with disabilities being celebrated and supported by their families and the community.
"The most rewarding moment for me was witnessing them truly own the day, stepping into the spotlight, and receiving the recognition they deserve for their passion and love of the game."
As the Papakura Sea Eagles continue to champion inclusivity and community engagement, the success of this event stands as a testament to the power of sport to bring people together.
